Intrathecal Drug Delivery
Intrathecal drug delivery is an advanced medical therapy in which medication is administered directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord, the intrathecal space, via a small, implanted pump and catheter. This targeted approach bypasses the blood-brain barrier, allowing for potent pain medications or antispasticity agents to reach the central nervous system at much lower doses than oral or systemic administration.
It is used for managing chronic pain, cancer pain, or severe spasticity. It can provide improved symptom control with fewer side effects, benefiting patients for whom traditional treatments have proven inadequate. The pump is typically placed under the skin in the abdomen and refilled periodically, delivering medication continuously or at programmed intervals for sustained relief.
