What is Neuromodulation?

Neuromodulation is the targeted alteration of nerve activity via electrical, chemical, or other stimuli delivered to specific sites in the nervous system.

Originating in the 1970s, it now encompasses treatments ranging from spinal cord stimulation and deep brain stimulation to sacral nerve and brain-computer interface systems.

Current and emerging indications include:

  • Chronic pain (neuropathic, cancer-related, spinal)
  • Movement disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s, dystonia)
  • Epilepsy
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Psychiatric and mood disorders (treatment-resistant depression)
  • Functional restoration (e.g. bladder control, sensory and motor deficits)

Neuromodulation therapies in Singapore are delivered by inter-disciplinary teams, including neurosurgeons, pain management specialists, neurologists, psychiatrists, urologists, colorectal surgeons, rehabilitation physicians working collaboratively to optimise patient outcomes.
